Nixon’s Story

For Nixon, a much-loved Pekingese, years of routine veterinary visits had never uncovered the true cause of his declining health. By the time a significant heart murmur was finally identified, it had already progressed rapidly into congestive heart failure. His family was devastated — until they found Dr. Carpenter and our team at Sawgrass Veterinary Cardiology.

His owner, a healthcare professional working in the nonprofit space, shared how this experience shifted everything: “I’ve always been deeply aware of the lack of empathy and compassion that can exist in healthcare… yet my recent experience at Sawgrass Veterinary Cardiology has genuinely redefined my expectations for what compassionate, high-quality care can look like—not just in human medicine, but in veterinary medicine as well.”

Dr. Carpenter introduced the family to the TEER procedure and spent extensive one-on-one time walking them through Nixon’s diagnosis, imaging, surgical process, and what they could realistically expect. As they described: “His attention to detail, kindness, and communication were beyond anything we’ve ever experienced.”

Throughout the journey, Nixon was never just a patient. From Brazil and our nursing team to every member of staff, he was treated like family. His owners felt supported at every stage, receiving timely updates during surgery and a clear, compassionate plan for recovery after.

Just three days after surgery, Nixon was already showing signs of his younger, more energetic self. Reflecting on the experience, his family told us: “Regardless of what the future holds, I can say with complete confidence that this is the only team I would ever trust with our pets again.”

Their closing words stay with us: “Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts. You have given our family hope, joy, and time — and there is no greater gift.”
